Philomena

Bimbo Manuel

WESLEY is a newly-sacked journalist who, in frustration and uttermost confusion, goes to drink off his sorrow at a roadside beer parlour. PHILOMENA, a prostitute in her last laps, runs the beer parlour as a side hustle, which has become her main sustenance. In a lightbulb moment, Wesley decides to interview Philomena, because he sees potential for a great story that will change the course of journalism. He soon finds himself being sucked into growing affection for Philo as she tells her gripping story. He, however, has not reckoned with AREA, a frustrated, wannabe scientist, broke teacher, and Philo’s most loyal customer and admirer. They have two things in common—cynicism and bitterness towards society. Following an almost serendipitous connection, the men demand to hear, and Philomena agrees to tell the story of her life, while they both vie for her affections. ‘Philomena: Interview with a Prostitute’ is a satirical play set in a seedy beer parlour and told with the deftness of a veteran thespian.

Bimbo Manuel

Bimbo Manuel is an award-winning actor, writer, voice-over artist, and content developer, who started his life in entertainment as a broadcaster with the Ogun State Television (OGTV), as a duty continuity announcer, newscaster, and show host. One of the most respected names in the Nigerian entertainment space today, he has remained a relevant and preferred act in his more than forty years of practice, accumulating some forty-eight awards, commendations, and nominations. An enthusiastic playwright, columnist, and aspiring novelist, Bimbo has very quickly built a rich library of works including ‘Philomena: Interview with a Prostitute’, a journey into the realities of a village girl turned prostitute (stage); and ‘Alhaji’ (stage), a bold, comic discussion of sexual dysfunction in men. His commissioned feature, ‘Esohe’, released in January 2018, won the Best Screenplay award at the Nollywood Travelling Festival in Toronto. ‘Pasito Deinde’ (home video), ‘Kanyinsola’ (home video), and several short films and playlets, are among his constantly growing body of works. His latest works, ‘The Call’ and ‘I, President’, are awaiting publication. Bimbo Manuel maintained the ‘Random Notions’, a satirical sociopolitical column in the Saturday Independent for four years, and ‘Chapters’ and ‘Musings’, a series of opinion columns for ‘The Crest Online’. He has been a major player in Bolanle Austen-Peters’ ‘Moremi’, ‘Wakaa the Musical’, ‘Full Circle’ and ‘Saro the Musical’ theatrical phenomena and was one-half of the immensely popular Saturday breakfast show on LTV, ‘Bimbo Sola Connect’, for seven years.
